Founded August 14, 1992, by several noted Ukrainian human rights activists,
including three former political prisoners, and members of the Union of Councils,
a US human rights organization. Registered as NGO.
Aim: promotion of human and
citizen rights in Ukraine as prescribed by International Agreements, as well
as establishment and consolidation of the civil society.
Objectives:
monitoring human rights violations in Ukraine;
legal support and court assistance;
publications and information dissemination;
research and sociology;
monitoring Ukrainian mass media;
analysis of social, cultural, and political processes in Ukraine within
human rights context;
expert assessment of laws, drafts, and by-laws as related to human rights;
civil and journalist investigations of individual human rights violations;
promoting interest of Ukrainian journalists to human rights issues;
lobbying.
The Bureau conducts its projects with financial assistance of donor organizations
and private persons. Staff: 10 persons, with additional experts engaged for specific
projects
